Organizational Life Cycle Questions

Use these questions to begin identifying how your organization makes decisions, distributes power, processes information, and adapts its structure as it grows in size and complexity.

These questions are adapted from the Organizational Life Cycle Framework used by ARCH in every engagement. There are no right or wrong answers — the goal is honest reflection.

Decision-Making & Power

  • How centralized is decision-making in your organization? Does one or a few people make most decisions, or is authority distributed?
  • Who holds real power in the organization — and does that match the org chart?
  • How quickly can your organization make and implement important decisions?
  • Are leaders spending time on the right decisions, or are they doing work that should be delegated?

Structure & Formalization

  • How formal are roles, policies, and procedures? Do people know what they are supposed to do?
  • How specialized are functions and teams? Are people wearing too many hats, or are boundaries too rigid?
  • Does the current organizational structure fit the company’s size, complexity, and strategy?
  • How do you onboard, train, and develop people — formally or informally?

Information & Communication

  • How does information move through the organization? Is it fast, accurate, and actionable?
  • Do frontline employees have access to the information they need to serve customers well?
  • Are there meaningful feedback loops between leadership, operations, and customers?
  • Are decisions based on data, or primarily on intuition and relationships?

Strategy & Growth

  • What stage of growth is your organization in — and is your strategy appropriate for that stage?
  • What would have to be true for your organization to move to the next stage?
  • Where are the constraints that slow you down — people, capital, systems, or market?
  • How does the organization identify and respond to competitive threats or new opportunities?

People & Leadership

  • Do you have the right leaders in the right roles for the current stage?
  • Is there a leadership succession plan — even informally?
  • How do you retain key people through transitions and periods of uncertainty?
  • What is the organizational culture, and does it match the stated values?

Exit, Harvest & Transition

  • Is there a formal succession plan — for ownership, management, or both?
  • What would happen to the organization if the founding leader left tomorrow?
  • Have you had a business valuation in the last 12-24 months?
  • What does a “successful exit” look like — for you, your family, your associates, and your customers?
